Euro Auto Groups: Urgent Action Needed on Vehicle Data Access

The letter the associations wrote to the EU president says swift action is needed to address anti-competitive practices by vehicle manufacturers.

As part of the Independent Service Providers (ISP) group, CLEPA, the European association of automotive suppliers, and nine other European associations representing the mobility ecosystem, including consumers and insurers, have written to the European Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen to express dismay at a new delay in the Commission’s adoption of a long-promised sectoral legislation for access to in-vehicle data.

In a letter written at the end of December, the signatories call for the swift publication of a sector-specific legislation proposal, crucial for innovation and competition in data-driven mobility sectors. The formal adoption of the proposal by the Commission under this mandate would send an important signal to all relevant stakeholders and help avoid significant market disruption, CLEPA said. The letter cites recent rulings by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) that have underscored the urgency of addressing anti-competitive practices by vehicle manufacturers as well as the strong dependency affecting suppliers on vehicle-generated data for creating the smart and digital solutions needed for future mobility.
