GREAT BEND, KS — Longtime drag racer Ray Motes was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement in Drag Racing Award by the Heartland Hot Rod Association. The ceremony was held earlier this fall at the Great Bend Kansas Dragway, home of the first National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) sanctioned event in 1955.

Motes, the only driver to have won world championships in NHRA, American Hot Rod Association and Atlantic Drag Racing Association, was also one of the first drivers to go 240 mph in a Fuel Funny Car. His career spanned from his high school days until his last pass in 1995. During his tenure he competed in AA Altered, Gas and Fuel Dragsters, Alcohol and Fuel Funny Cars and to this day still holds the Top Gas record.

“I am honored and proud to have received this award,” Motes said. “When I started racing as a teenager, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would reach the level I did. I am truly lucky to be blessed with the opportunities I have had.”

Motes is still heavily involved with racing and the automotive aftermarket, as vice president and general manager of Taylor Cable, a manufacturer of racing ignition wires and other automotive wiring components and accessories.
