No Decision Reached by F1, Cooper and Bridgestone Apparently Out

F1 teams narrowed the choice to two: Michelin and Pirelli.

From Tire Review

The Monaco race weekend came and went without a firm, final determination on which tiremaker will supply Formula One next year.

But it wasn’t a total washout, as F1 teams narrowed the choice to two: Michelin and Pirelli.

Still, depending on the source, either tiremaker holds all the cards and will win the day. Strong rumors following the Grand Prix of Monaco favored both brands.

Clearly, though, Cooper Avon and any other brand mentioned in recent weeks are no longer being considered. Bridgestone apparently has waved off late efforts by teams to stay as the sole tire supplier.

"No decision has been taken yet," said Stefano Domenicali, chief of the Ferrari team. “I think another week and maybe by next weekend hopefully we will be able to find a solution. There are still only two possibilities – Michelin and Pirelli. I don’t see any other option."

Domenicali said he hoped a final decision would be reached by the Grand Prix of Turkey, set for Labor Day weekend.

“It’s not clear cut which way it will go,” Mercedes GP CEO Nick Fry told one media outlet. “The technical and commercial packages are different. We think Pirelli and Michelin can both do the job, and to be honest we are ambivalent about it.”
