NASCAR officials have announced the baseline rules configuration for the Next Gen vehicle set for its NASCAR Cup Series debut in 2022. A 670-horsepower target engine output and a lower-downforce four-inch rear spoiler will be used at short tracks, road courses and intermediate-sized tracks.
The announcement follows two days of organizational tests at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
“So, the bottom line of all this, and you’ll hear this from the drivers, is that this package with the Next Gen car puts it back in the drivers’ hands and we’re excited about what that will do in 2022, for sure,” NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O’Donnell said.
Tests are scheduled for Jan. 5-6, at the newly repaved and rebuilt Atlanta Motor Speedway and Jan. 11-12, at Daytona International Speedway, for the rules configuration on superspeedways.
