Guest Commentary From Dr. John Passante: Add A Little Spice

A good meal is made better by adding the right amount of the right spice. The same can be said for our lives. The right spice (creative thinking, following our dreams) can make a good life better and more fulfilling.

The truth of the matter is we all have our daily routines, which, of course, keep us on point and enable us to accomplish our objectives for the day. Maximizing and managing our time are indeed worthy pursuits and require our attention.

My fear is that today we tend to be overscheduled, which leaves very little time for imagination and creativity in this era of tremendous technological change. It is important to drop our assumptions. Now is the time to think differently. Do you ever feel you are re-living the same day over and over? Boring! That is a deep rut!

The younger generations have recently taught me "YOLO" (YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE)! How that is a message worth listening to! We all need to put some kick (spice) in our lives!

It is time for us to find our sanctuary and make time for ourselves, to stop overanalyzing and celebrate the fact that all emotions are a beautiful thing. Find a place where you can think and reflect!

Think about the excitement and true high of opening our minds, arms and hearts to new ideas, new things and new people. The essence of life is to find our purpose and passion. Share your passion with others. Life is about the people we meet and the creativity that ensues. The future for all of us belongs to new ideas. There is nothing more precious than an idea!

A good meal is made better by adding the right amount of the right spice. The same can be said for our lives. The right spice (creative thinking, following our dreams) can make a good life better and more fulfilling.

Find time to think. The secret to creativity is sanctuary. Give yourself time and a place to think during the day. Find that special place where you will not be interrupted.

The enemy of intuition is assumption. Why add a certain spice to the sauce? We have always done it that way. Sound familiar? Change is different! In these times of technological change, it is time for fresh thinking (spice). Inspiration comes from creating a better future! Sprinkle some spice on the negative people you meet or work with. Every good idea needs a champion to add spice and determination to keep their idea alive.

Gandhi said it best, “Strength does not come from physical capacity, it comes from an indomitable will.” Adding spice to one’s life takes courage. It is the ability to keep changing and growing and saying "I will try again tomorrow." There is no limit to our ability to create. Remember the power of the human spirit! The quest for creative ideas opens the door to freedom. Your brain is much better than you think!

Let’s face it, we all come into this world curious as children. We asked "why?" all the time, to the frustration of our parents. As adults, we settle into our routines and tend to accept things and ask "why?" less! Over the years, our new ideas get rejected so we give up. I observe this every day.

So, the mission for all of us is to break out of our predictable days. Seek change and looking for ways to add spice to your life, your relationships, business decisions and I promise that life will taste better! Try it – you will like it!

Beware of the idea killers. They are in every organization! You have heard these words: We tried it before! Why rock the boat? There is no budget! What will our competition think?

Take ownership of your creative ideas and own them! Become a champion of innovation and positive change!

Successful organizations in the 21st century need to nurture the emerging creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communications.

Add some hot sauce to your life. It may give you the spark you have been missing! There is a creative idea ready to be born, please give it some air to breathe.

Dare to dream! Kennedy vowed to put a man on the moon, and we did it!
