BETHESDA, Md. The Auto International Association (AIA), a segment of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA), has introduced a new chapter in its certification program by going fully online with its open-book import nameplate certification tests, the Imports Parts Specialist and Master’s Level Import Parts Specialist tests.
Including coverage of all vehicle systems, each test also provides reference resources for test-takers, and both tests are given in an "open book" format. Each test is a comprehensive process that requires a candidate to locate information generally specific to import nameplate vehicles, replicating the "research" component of being an on-the-job counterperson using available resources to provide the right parts to help their customers diagnose and repair vehicles.
Originally created in 1989, the program is designed to help create "real experts" in the import parts business through a process that teaches and tests a range of technical skills and knowledge of today’s parts counter professionals.
The online testing program was created through the collaborative efforts of AIA’s Education Committee and Babcox Publications [Editor’s note: Babcox is the parent publisher of aftermarketNews.]. Currently, more than 3,000 aftermarket professionals have earned the Import Parts Specialist certificate, and about 750 professionals have earned the Master’s Level certificate.
The testing is provided in two phases, and applicants must achieve the Specialist Level before attempting the Master’s Level program. The completion of these tests fulfills a testing pre-requisite for the University of the Aftermarket’s Automotive Aftermarket Professional (AAP) designation. A score of 80 percent or better is required to pass each test. Those who pass the tests receive a signed certificate, letter and embroidered insignia recognizing their accomplishments.
All AAIA members are eligible for discounts when ordering tests. Only AIA members receive exclusive additional discounts when ordering the tests, and also qualify for discounts on volume purchases.
