NORCROSS, Ga. — AkzoNobel Car Refinishes Americas has been chosen by Aptera, a developer of futuristic concept cars, as the paint provider for their concept vehicles. All Aptera vehicles being produced today are painted with the AkzoNobel waterborne system, Sikkens Autowave.

The Aptera concept car is currently participating in the Progressive Insurance Automotive Xprize competition. Progressive Insurance sponsors the competition as a method of inspiring the development of a new generation of viable, safe and fuel efficient vehicles. This competition involves production teams from around the world that have designed and built production capable, super fuel efficient and clean vehicles. Following a series of long-distance exercises, winners of the competition will share in a $10 million cash prize to assist them in bringing their innovations to the consumer market.

"Aptera has the audacious objective of delivering the world’s most energy efficient production vehicle," said Marques McCammon, director of marketing for Aptera. "It takes Aptera technology and the technology of each of our component partners to reach our objective. We are honored to have a product of AkzoNobel, the world’s largest supplier of paint and coatings, on our vision for the future of transpiration."

"Providing tomorrow’s answers today is the cornerstone promise of AkzoNobel," said Tim Loden, director of marketing for AkzoNobel Car Refinishes Americas. "Sikkens was a pioneer in the development of waterborne technology with Autowave. And today, AkzoNobel is rated in the top five on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. The creativity and ingenuity of the Aptera development team reflects so many of our own business drivers. We are truly pleased to be able to share in this innovative endeavor for future transportation alternatives."
