APRA Joins with SEMA in Opposing Federal “Cash for Clunkers” Program

In its statement APRA President Bill Gager stated, "Cash for Clunkers would use taxpayer dollars to purchase and crush older vehicles into blocks of scrap metal, which will remove valuable cores from the market for remanufacturing and will deprive the owners of older cars of an economical source of replacement parts."

CHANTILLY, Va. – The Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA) has issued a statement opposing any efforts to include a nationwide “Cash for Clunkers” program in the economic stimulus package currently being considered in Washington.

In its statement APRA President Bill Gager stated, “Cash for Clunkers would use taxpayer dollars to purchase and crush older vehicles into blocks of scrap metal, which will remove valuable cores from the market for remanufacturing and will deprive the owners of older cars of an economical source of replacement parts.

“These clunker programs do not consider in their calculations the life cycle of the remanufacturing process and the extension of product life that takes place. Clunker legislation does more harm to the environment and is counterproductive to the whole idea of repair, reuse, remanufacturing and recycling,” added Gager.
