MEMA Names Inaugural Winners of Joseph A. Magliochetti Industry Champion Award

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Rep. Joe Knollenberg (R-Mich.) are the winners of the first-ever Joseph A. Magliochetti Industry Champion Award, which has been established by MEMA to recognize public officials for outstanding leadership on behalf of the automotive supplier industry. The first ever presentation of the award, named in honor of the late president and CEO of Dana Corp., will be held at a gala dinner on Wednesday, May 5, during the MEMA Legislative and Public Policy Summit in Washington, D.C.

CCAR Partners with OSHA to Create a Safe Workplace in the Auto Industry

The Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair (CCAR) has formalized an alliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to address worker safety and health issues in the automotive industry. The alliance not only highlights workplace vehicle safety, but will also focus on abrasive wheel machinery (including associated silica hazards) and ergonomics. The alliance provides CCAR affiliates and others in the automotive industry with information, guidance and access to training resources that will further safety and health for industry workers.

Hella and Stanley Purchase Shares in Korean Auto Supplier

Automotive lighting suppliers Hella KG Hueck & Co. and Stanley Electric Co. Ltd. have purchased a five percent share in Korean auto supplier Samlip Industrial Company Ltd., based in Daegu, Korea. According to Joe Borruso, president and CEO of Hella North America, the investment represents a further expansion of the company’s 15- year-old relationship with the Korean supplier.

TBC Reports Record Fourth Quarter and Year-End Results

TBC Corp., one of the nation’s leading marketers of automotive replacement tires, reported record sales and earnings for the fourth quarter and year, which ended December 31, 2003. Net sales in the fourth quarter increased 33.5 percent to $370.7 million, compared to $277.8 million in the prior-year period. Same store sales for TBC’s retail segment increased 4.5 percent in the fourth quarter. TBC’s total unit tire sales increased 10.7 percent in the fourth quarter, compared to a 2.2 percent increase in unit shipments by tire manufacturers based on preliminary reports.

Two Off-Road Organizations Promise to Add Excitement to the 2004 SEMA Spring Expo

The Off-Road Business Association (ORBA) and the United Rockcrawling & Off-Road Challenge (UROC) will participate in the annual SEMA Spring Expo, which is slated to take place March 5-6 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. According to Peter MacGillivray, vice president of marketing and communications for SEMA, ORBA and UROC will bring the excitement of the rapidly growing off-road sports scene to the annual SEMA Spring Expo.

ASA Chief Staff Executive Addresses Consumer, Insurer Issues on Two CBS Programs

The Automotive Service Association (ASA) and its Chief Staff Executive Ron Pyle played a significant role in two CBS programs that addressed the issue of insurer-owned body shops. Pyle was recently interviewed at ASA’s headquarters in Bedford, Texas, and appeared Wednesday, Feb. 11, on the “CBS Evening News” during its “Eye on America” segment. On Thursday, Feb. 12, Pyle provided follow-up coverage on this issue when he was interviewed again by CBS during an appearance on “The Early Show.”
