Former Metaldyne Employees Indicted for Theft of Trade Secrets; Shared Info With Chinese Competitor

A federal grand jury indictment unsealed yesterday in Detroit reveals that a former vice president and two former senior employees of Metaldyne were charged with plotting to steal and stealing Metaldyne’s secret process for manufacturing heavy automotive parts from powdered metal, and providing this information to a Chinese competitor. Charged in the 64-count indictment were Anne Lockwood, 53, formerly a vice president of sales at Metaldyne; her husband, Michael Haehnel, 51, formerly a senior engineer at Metaldyne, both of Rockwood, MI; and Fuping Liu, 42, a former metallurgist for Metaldyne, of Westland, MI. Liu worked out of Metaldyne’s Shanghai office until April 2004.

The Valvoline division of Ashland Inc., and Fallbrook Technologies Inc. (Fallbrook), a technology development and intellectual property licensing company, announced that they have entered into a trademark licensing and development agreement to design, test and market specialty fluids designed to optimize the performance of Fallbrook’s NuVinci Continuously Variable Planetary (CVP) transmission technology.

Automakers Sue California Over Emissions

Automobile manufacturers sued on Tuesday to block the world’s toughest vehicle emissions standards, adopted by California regulators in September to cut greenhouse gases. The manufacturers argue in their lawsuit the standards, which could set a precedent for other states, must by law be the responsibility of the federal government.
