The latest information on counterfeiting is now available through a new brochure created by the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA). The brochure — “Stop Counterfeiting of Automotive and Truck Parts,” is available free to members MEMA’s market segment associations: the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA), the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association (HDMA) and the Original Equipment Suppliers Association (OESA).

The Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA) has donated $5,000 to the “Be Car Care Aware,” campaign in honor of the Automotive Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA). Until the 1980s, counterfeiting was thought of as a victimless crime, conjuring up images of knock-off brand-name watches and handbags. Today, however, counterfeiting is big business, accounting for five to eight percent of all goods sold worldwide. In terms of criminal activity, counterfeiting is among the most lucrative crimes today, its impact on the global economy estimated at $350 billion to $500 billion a year. Global Automotive Aftermarket Scholarship Fund Received Record Donations in 2004

The Global Automotive Aftermarket Scholarship program, funded through the Global Automotive Aftermarket Symposium (GAAS), received more than $20,000 in corporate and individual donations in 2004, helping the program award a record 145 scholarships of $1,000 to students planning aftermarket careers, and to sons and daughters of industry families.

MEMA Names New Director of Communications

Margaret Beck has been promoted to director of communications for the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA). She formerly served as the association’s manager of communications. In her new position, Beck will be responsible for production of member communications for MEMA and its market segment associations: the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA), the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association (HDMA) and the Original Equipment Suppliers Association (OESA).

Industry Reaches Out to Tsunami Victims

Numerous automotive aftermarket industry associations and businesses have been reaching out to the victims of last month’s devastating tsunami in south Asia. The 8.9-magnitude quake hit December 26 off the coast of Indonesia, triggering extremely large waves that have brought massive flooding, damage and loss of life in the region. More than 140,000 are reported dead, with countless others left homeless and injured.
