SEATTLE — Microsoft and Fiat reportedly have reached agreement to turn out a new onboard car-data system.
The plan is to make a system running Microsoft’s Windows Automotive software available for every vehicle model from one of Europe’s biggest automakers, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer said.
This is the first time Microsoft has reached a deal directly with an automaker, rather than with an auto electronics supplier. Also, it marks the first time a Windows-based system will be offered as a feature across a company’s entire line of cars.
Italy’s Fiat Auto is the parent company for Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo brands.
In a field called telematics, Microsoft’s software runs onboard information and communications systems, allowing, among other things, hands-free phone calls and access to online driving directions.
