The Pulse: What is the Most Common Engine to Be Rebuilt?

Each week, The Pulse provides insight into the buying, sourcing and brand-loyalty habits of counter personnel and professional technicians. This week, using Babcox Research, we look at annual engine production trends.

According to Engine Builder magazine Editor Doug Kaufman, while General Motors (GM) may have recently suffered the trauma of going through bankruptcy, the automaker still has a strong reputation within the rebuilding community. In the 2009 Engine Builder (EB) Machine Shop Market Profile, the Chevy 350 ranked as the most common engine rebuilt, a position it has held for several years. It is the number-one engine rebuilt by 56 percent of shops surveyed, up from 50 percent last year. It’s other GM siblings account for another 18 percent, meaning that three-quarters of the time, when the shops surveyed are rebuilding an engine, it is likely to be made by General Motors.

The data generated for this year’s Machine Shop Market Profile was collected through survey questionnaires sent to the machine shop/custom engine rebuilding membership of the Automotive Engine Rebuilding Association. Analysis of the data was completed by Babcox Research.

These and other statistics can be found in the 2009 Engine Builder Machine Shop Market Profile, as originally published in the June 2009 issue of Engine Builder magazine. For more information about Babcox Research, go to: http://www.babcox.com/marketing_research.html.
