MEMA’s Brian Duggan Talks to CBS News About Counterfeit Auto Parts

The issue of controlling counterfeit motor vehicle parts continues to build momentum, grabbing the attention of the national media. On June 25, Brian Duggan, the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association’s (MEMA) director of international programs, was interviewed by “CBS Evening News” during a Consumer Report segment that focused on fakes and dangerous consumer products. During the interview, Duggan spoke to the high quality of today’s counterfeit products. “The parts are getting so good that they are making their way into what we would normally consider legitimate distribution channels,” said Duggan, who displayed a variety of fake parts ranging from brake pads to tensioners.

Building on last year’s program, exhibitors will receive several notices provided in multiple languages advising of sanctions they will face if found to violate trademarks and patents with products and promotional materials displayed at AAPEX.

Rep. Knollenberg Introduces Bill To Fight Counterfeit Goods

U.S. Representative Joe Knollenberg (R-Mich. 9th District) yesterday introduced legislation to strengthen the federal law used to prosecute counterfeiters whose products threaten public health, harm American manufacturers and cost jobs in the U.S. The Stop Counterfeiting in Manufactured Goods Act would require the mandatory destruction of equipment used to manufacture and package counterfeit goods. In addition, the proposed legislation addresses methods that counterfeiters have used to evade prosecution, such as the selling of patch sets or medallions that can later be attached to generic merchandise and given the appearance of a genuine product, as well as placing a counterfeit mark on goods not specifically listed in the trademark registration.
