PPG-Painted ‘Project American Heroes’ Classic Chevelle Auctioned for $250,000

Proceeds benefit Armed Forces Foundation.

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio — PPG contributed the paint for a newly restored 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle muscle car auctioned off as part of Super Chevy magazine’s "Project American Heroes" fundraising program. The sale of the unique vehicle was conducted by Barrett-Jackson Auctions Saturday, June 26 at the Orange County Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif. The winning bid was $250,000. All proceeds from the car’s sale go to the Armed Forces Foundation for the benefit of military veterans and their families.

"PPG is proud to continue its support for our armed services as a major sponsor of Super Chevy’s Project American Heroes," said Jeff Griffin, collision segment manager for PPG. "This extremely worthwhile program deserves the best quality products, and our Deltron brand coatings ensured a stunning finish for such an amazing car. The lucky bidder not only got an incredible machine, but also did something important for the men and women of our military and their families."

The team at Route 66 Motorsports, New Lenox, Ill., contributed time and talent to make this car a reality. Starting with a donated Chevelle body, Route 66 did a ground-up restoration to produce a classic muscle car. The team used PPG’s line of Deltron products to clean and prep the body for its black and torch red paint job – achieved with Deltron 2000 DBC 9700 Basecoat Black and DCU 2021 Urethane Clear.

Complementing the finish is a 550-horsepower, supercharged V-8 engine along with a six-speed transmission and a supporting cast of sophisticated suspension, brake, fuel, radiator and filtration system components.

Project American Heroes was started in 2007 by Super Chevy magazine to provide financial support to the men and women of the Armed Forces through the sale of classic Chevy automobiles. The ’70 Chevelle is the third vehicle built for the program and painted with PPG automotive finishes. The first was a 1957 Chevrolet convertible followed by a 1969 Camaro coupe, which was auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson for an impressive $500,000.

The Armed Forces Foundation, a Washington, D.C.-based, non-profit, charitable organization, offers comfort and solace to active-duty and retired military, National Guard, and reserve personnel and military families through financial support, career counseling services, homeowners education, recreational therapy programs and funding awareness projects.
