Singer had a long and varied aftermarket career that included running his own manufacturer’s rep agency, a jobber store, Mel-Jule Auto Parts (Kensington, Md.) and most recently working as a service manager at Graeves Auto & Appliance (Olney, Md.). He also continued to serve as a Washington, D.C., area rep for Pitt Penn Oil Co.

Maryland Governor Proclaims Automotive Service Provider Week

The Chesapeake Automotive Business Association (CABA), in cooperation with the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence and the Washington, Maryland, Delaware Service Station and Automotive Repair Association, have received a proclamation from Governor Martin O’Malley establishing June 9 through June 15, 2008 as Automotive Service Professionals Week in the State of Maryland.

Federated Honors Outstanding Members

Federated Auto Parts presented its most prestigious member awards at its annual meeting held April 23-26 in Dallas. Mike Jacabacci of Woodbury Automotive Warehouse was presented with the Art Fisher Memorial Membership Award. Cliff Hovis of Hovis Auto & Truck Supply was named the Co-Man Member of the Year and Duke Young of Pat Young Service Co. was selected as the Outstanding Marketing Member of the Year. The late Marvin Mastroff, a longtime Federated member, was honored with a special Art Fisher Memorial Award, which was accepted by his son Russell Mastroff.

Sherwin-Williams Acquires Mexico-based Automotive Coatings Business

The Sherwin-Williams Co. has acquired certain assets of Flex Recubrimientos, Acabados Automotrices and related companies. The purchase price was not disclosed. Headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico, the privately owned companies manufacture and distribute automotive aftermarket body fillers, putties, primers and other vehicle refinish products.

Commercial Vehicle Group Reports First Quarter 2006 Results

Commercial Vehicle Group reported revenues of $229.3 million for the first quarter, which ended March 31, up 50.5 percent compared to $152.4 million in the prior-year period. Operating income for the first quarter was $25.5 million, a 52.7 percent increase, compared to $16.7 million last year. Net income for the quarter was $13.4 million, or 62 cents per diluted share, compared to $10.9 million, or 59 cents per diluted share, in the prior-year quarter. Fully diluted shares outstanding for the quarter were 21.5 million compared to 18.3 million in the prior-year quarter.

ASE to Manage NASTF

Many changes are afoot at the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF), the not-for-profit group that takes responsibility for identifying and rectifying gaps in the availability and accessibility of automotive service information and tools to independent repair shops. At its most recent meeting, held via conference call on March 22, the NASTF planning group voted to accept one of three proposals for the formal management of the task force, which up until now has been entirely volunteer-led. Out of proposals from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Equipment & Tool Institute (ETI) and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the group has selected ASE to manage the task force.
