Attorney Shirley Peterson Elected to Goodyear Board

Attorney Shirley Peterson has been elected to Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s board of directors. The recipient of a number of national awards, Peterson began a 20-year career as an attorney with the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson in Washington, D.C., in 1969, becoming a partner in 1978. In 1989, she accepted an appointment by President George H.W. Bush as assistant attorney general, Tax Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. Peterson remained there until 1992, when President Bush appointed her commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service.

Grote Names Brewer, Transpro Top Sales Guns

Grote Industries has awarded its top sales performance awards for 2003. Nan Brewer of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, was named the top aftermarket sales manager, while Transpro of Lee’s Summit, Mo., was named top manufacturer’s representative. Transpro, headed by Jeff White and John Cross, was also awarded the top prize in OEM performance.

Jiffy Lube, Inc. and Tomorrow’s Technician Sponsor Car Care Council Women’s Board Scholarship

The Car Care Council Women’s Board announced that Jiffy Lube, Inc. and Tomorrow’s Technician magazine have agreed to sponsor the $1,000 scholarship for the second year in a row. The scholarship will be awarded to a female student who has completed at least one year in an ASE-certified, post-secondary automobile technology program and plans on entering the automotive field upon graduation.

SEMA Board member Steven Bolio, partner in Scafidi-Bolio & Associates in Waltham, Mass., and Claudine McDermott, president of CTM MEDIA, Inc. in Larchmont, N.Y., were appointed to the 15-member committee by SBN chairman Terry Kohl.

For the 17th year in a row, Federal-Mogul Corp. has been presented with Jasper Engines & Transmissions’ “Preferred Partner” award. Jasper is one of Federal-Mogul’s largest customers, and the only company to have received the “Preferred Partner” award every year since its inception.

American Tire Distributors Hosts National TireStarz Dealer Conference

American Tire Distributors (ATD) hosted its first national TireStarz Dealer Conference March 4 – 7. Ninety-nine dealers and their guests attended the four-day session at the Opryland Resort in Nashville, Tenn. The meeting featured a series of seminars and workshops designed to give ATD dealers timely information on important market trends and strategies for building their business. Mark Emkes, outgoing chairman, CEO and president of Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire, addressed the group, as did William “Bill” Berry, American Tire Distributors’ president and COO.

Lean Manufacturers Recognized for Excellence

Ten automotive suppliers are among the recipients of the 2004 Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing. Dubbed the “Nobel prize of Manufacturing” by Business Week magazine, the Shingo Prize recognizes manufacturers who follow Toyota’s LEAN manufacturing principles. Administered by the College of Business, Utah State University, nine state-level awards and a public-sector category, primarily for Military Depots doing re-manufacturing, have been implemented in recent months.

SEMA Spring Expo Reaches New Level Of Success

Organizers for the 2004 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Spring Expo, have reported that this year’s show was the biggest regional show the association has held to date. The Expo took place March 5-6 at the Indiana Convention Center, Indianapolis. A day of seminars preceded the actual exhibit. Although attendance figures have not yet been audited, show organizers said preliminary reports show an increase of approximately 65 percent in buyer attendance, and 30 percent in total attendance from the SEMA Spring Expo in Nashville last February.
