CARFIX Issues Statement on Breakdown of Right to Repair Talks

The Coalition for Automotive Repair and Fair Information Xchange (CARFIX) is following up on a statement the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) issued on Monday that said talks had been halted between aftermarket associations and vehicle manufacturers to find some sort of non-legislative alternative to the Motor Vehicle Owner’s Right to Repair Act. CARFIX is comprised of members from the Automotive Service Association, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers. The various groups had been in discussions for the past two months.

Locksmith Association Withdraws Support of Right to Repair Legislation

Coalition Deems Auto Repair Legislation Unnecessary

The Coalition for Automotive Repair and Fair Information Xchange (CARFIX), which includes the Automotive Service Association (ASA), representing more than 65,000 independent auto service technicians employed by member businesses; the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers, opposes H.R. 2048, the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act.

AAIA Testifies at House Subcommittee Hearing on Right to Repair

The Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) delivered compelling testimony on the impact of the Right to Repair Act on small businesses at a special hearing of the House Subcommittee on Workforce, Empowerment and Government Programs of the Small Business Committee about the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act (H.R. 2048) held yesterday.

House Small Business Subcommittee to Take Up Right to Repair

The House Small Business Committee Subcommittee on Workforce, Empowerment and Government Programs will hold a hearing on Tuesday, June 28 on the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act (H.R. 2048). Introduced in May of this year by Reps. Joe Barton, R-Texas, Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y. and Darrel Issa, R-Calif., H.R. 2048 would require that car companies make available to independent service facilities, the same service information and tools that are provided to new car dealers.

Newly Formed Coalition Opposes ‘Right to Repair’ Legislation

The Automotive Service Association (ASA), the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers have formed a new coalition that favors existing voluntary efforts – instead of federal legislation – to provide access to technical repair data to all repair shops and service providers. CARFIX opposes the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act, H.R. 2735, which was last introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2003, and its Senate companion, S. 2138. Members of CARFIX say they agree that consumers should have a choice in where to have their vehicles serviced and repaired. However, the coalition has made it a mission to educate policymakers about the voluntary program that is currently in place and to persuade them that legislation is unnecessary.

CARS 2004 Sets Attendance Record

The Automotive Service Association has reported that a new attendance record was set with this year’s Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS).
