From AAIA Capital Report
WASHINGTON, DC —The House Small Business Committee Subcommittee on Workforce, Empowerment and Government Programs will hold a hearing on Tuesday, June 28 on the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act (H.R. 2048). Introduced in May of this year by Reps. Joe Barton, R-Texas, Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y. and Darrel Issa, R-Calif., H.R. 2048 would require that car companies make available to independent service facilities, the same service information and tools that are provided to new car dealers.
“The hearing will provide an opportunity to highlight the impact on small aftermarket businesses of not being able to obtain critical information and tools to work on today’s highly computerized vehicles,” said AAIA’s vice president of government affairs, Aaron Lowe, who will be testifying at the hearing. “Legislators will see first-hand the importance of this issue to small businesses and to the millions of motorists that depend on small repair shops to keep their second biggest investment operating cleanly, safety and dependably.”
In addition to AAIA, Dennis Houska, Houska Automotive Service, a NAPA shop owner from Colorado and Fred Bordoff, a repair show owner in New York and vice president of the Service Station Dealers of America, along with a representative from AAA, also are scheduled to testify in support of the need for Right to Repair legislation. John Cabaniss, Association of International Automobile Manufacturers, will be testifying on behalf of the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) and a representative from the Automotive Service Association (ASA) are scheduled to testify in opposition.
