Under pressure from automakers, the affiliate of J. D. Power and Associates that regularly provides pricing, demographic and other key automotive data to the media no longer will do so. Power Information Network, or PIN, which handles about 60 requests a month from television, radio and newspapers, such as the Detroit Free Press, will stop in a move the company labeled a “business decision.” The company has been notifying journalists of the change, effective Sept. 1, for the last week.

The federal agency that oversees auto safety has decided — based largely on arguments from automakers and their Washington, D.C., lobbyists — that reams of data relating to unsafe automobiles or defective parts will not be available to the public. Specifically, the government has banned the release of car and truck warranty-claims information, customer complaints and early-warning reports about defects from dealers, automakers and rental car companies, even if media outlets or other groups push for it under the Freedom of Information Act.

Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum Appoints Manager of Marketing and Advertising

Rose Dickinson has been named manager of marketing and advertising at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum. In this new role, Dickinson will be responsible for the museum’s advertising, including print and radio for the California Hot Rod Reunion, National Hot Rod Reunion and museum special events. Dickinson’s NHRA career began in 1988 after she left Pennzoil to help start-up National Dragster in-house publications.

Cummins Mourns the Loss of Former Chairman and CEO J. Irwin Miller

Cummins Inc. has issued a statement mourning the death of Joseph Irwin Miller, who died this week at the age of 95. Miller was born in Columbus, Ind. in 1909. J. Irwin Miller built Cummins from a family business into a Fortune 500 company with more than 25,000 employees in 131 countries and more than $6 billion in annual sales. He is credited for transforming his hometown of Columbus, Ind., into a city of architectural wonders, earning it the nickname the Athens of the Prairie. The company said he will be eulogized as a great business leader, social activist and philanthropist whose influence will continue well into the 21st century.

Island Clean Air, Inc. (ICA), a manufacturer of mobile commercial air filtration systems for the automotive, print and graphic industries, has named Bob Beattie as its new vice president of trade development for its Auto Body Division.

AAPEX Organizers Warn: Counterfeiters Beware

While automotive trade shows can be a bonanza for counterfeiters of replacement parts, organizers of the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX), which takes place Nov. 2-5, in Las Vegas, warn firms that make or sell fake parts to watch out. AAPEX has a long standing policy to take action against counterfeiting, according to Bill Glasgow of AAPEX show management company W.T. Glasgow Inc.
