Siemens VDO Automotive Expands Detroit-Area Testing Facility

Siemens VDO Automotive is investing $2 million to transform its former machining and tooling shop in Auburn Hills, Mich., into a 5,000-square-foot fuel validation test center for its Powertrain Fuel Supply Systems (FS) division. The project is expected to be complete in May 2004. The new fuel validation laboratory will bring product testing and validation closer to local development engineers and Detroit-based customers, said the company.

Axles, Wheels on Crown Vics Investigated

Ford Motor Co.’s Crown Victoria sedans, the subject of lawsuits over fatal fires and a recall of some 2003 models for potential wheel cracks, face a U.S. inquiry after police departments said axles broke or wheels fell off. The investigation covers 287,819 police and civilian 2003 models of the Crown Victoria and the similar Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on its Web site. Two police fleets reported that axles broke or wheels fell off on a total of four cars, without accidents or injuries, the agency said.

ArvinMeritor Reports Fiscal Year 2004 First-Quarter Results

ArvinMeritor reported sales of $2.2 billion and net income of $19 million, or $0.28 per diluted share, for its first fiscal quarter, which ended Dec. 31, 2003. This is compared to the prior year’s first-quarter net income of $32 million, or $0.47 per diluted share. Results for the first quarter of 2004 include a net charge of $0.09 per diluted share as a result of the company’s decision to withdraw its tender offer to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Dana Corp. This charge includes $16 million of pre-tax costs, partially offset by a pre-tax gain of $7 million on the sale of Dana stock owned by the company.

Coyle Named to Fuel Systems Job at TI Automotive

Patrick Coyle has been named North American regional director for TI Automotive’s Global Fuel Systems Division. Previously, Coyle was responsible for global fuel-system quality. TI Automotive is a tier one supplier of integrated fuel-storage and delivery systems.

Johnson Controls Delays Move

TI Automotive Names Ernst Kuhlen to New Position

TI Automotive has named Ernst Kuhlen director of global fuel delivery pumps and modules. Kuhlen will be responsible for development and implementation of the company’s global pump-and-module product strategy. Based in Neuss, Germany, he will report to Manouchehr Kambakhsh, vice president for global engineering. Previously engineering director for pumps at Pierburg AG in Neuss, Kuhlen joined TI Automotive as part of the company’s recent purchase of Pierburg’s pump business.

More Details on the Future of Honeywell’s Friction Materials Business

Yesterday, Honeywell announced that it had terminated discussions with Federal Mogul regarding the possible sale of its friction materials business, which manufactures and markets the well-known aftermarket brand Bendix. After several months of negotiations, the parties were unable to agree on terms of a deal. Now Honeywell has reported that the friction materials division will remain part of Honeywell and will become closely aligned with the company’s business initiatives and operating plan. According to Joe Puishys, president of Honeywell friction materials, the company is in the process of making investments in both the aftermarket and OE segments of the business.
