MEYLE Adds Mechanical Seals To Water Pumps And Kit For Cardan Shaft Repair

The newly developed mechanical seal material extends service life of water pumps and, according to the company, the repair kit can yield cost savings of up to 70 percent.

MEYLE - LogoMEYLE has recently introduced new products: additions to its water pumps and a cardan shaft center bearing repair kit.

Mechanical Seals to Water Pumps

MEYLE has launched a quality campaign to demonstrate that water pumps can be designed to last longer. To achieve this, the Wulf Gaertner Autoparts AG’s team of in-house engineers has scrutinized defective parts to pinpoint the root cause of premature water pump failure.

Based on these findings, MEYLE water pumps have been redesigned to feature mechanical seals created with silicon carbide. Silicon carbide is a material distinguished by its hardness compared to conventional standards on the independent aftermarket, delivering durability and increased service life while minimising friction, says the company. Leading car manufacturers also rely on the seal type which is now fitted in around 40 percent of the MEYLE water pump range. In addition to the specified MEYLE guarantee period, the company offers a minimum service life guarantee for MEYLE passenger car water pumps of 100,000 miles or 160,934 kilometres.

The company says a defective water pump can eventually destroy the engine. According to the company, 40 percent of the MEYLE water pump range have already been reengineered to feature the new seal type which offers a level of quality above and beyond what is typically available on the independent aftermarket. Its narrow sealing gap of approximately 1μm, effectively reducing the number of critical particles penetrating the sealing gap. Any tiny contaminants trapped between the sealing faces are ground down to minute particles, eliminating any risk of early part failure.

Repair Kit for Cardan Shaft Repair

In 2014, Wulf Gaertner Autoparts AG launched a full-service cardan shaft center bearing kit for the Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg cardan shaft repair, thus enabling workshops to repair a faulty center bearing swiftly without having to replace the complete cardan shaft, as is required for the original design. Now, the company is adding is expanding the repair kit. Supplied with all parts required for the cardan shaft center bearing repair, the kit also includes all components for the flex disc change.

The company says there used to be only one remedy in the event of a cardan shaft center bearing failure on a Porsche Cayenne or VW Touareg: Changing the complete cardan shaft assembly. In 2014, Hamburg manufacturer Wulf Gaertner Autoparts offered a cardan shaft center bearing set which can be replaced separately. With all the necessary components coming in a single set (including the bearing, clamp ring, rubber boot and grease) repair professionals no longer needed to re-install used components, such as the rubber boot. The recently launched value-added kit also includes the flex disc complete with all screws required for replacement.

Dispensing with time-intensive cardan shaft assembly replacement, the new center shaft bearing yields cost savings of up to 70 percent.

To ensure smooth and professional installation the kit comes with step-by-step fitting instructions. In addition, the entire repair process is demonstrated in a new video of the “MEYLE Mechanics” on the “MEYLE TV” YouTube channel.

The new cardan shaft center bearing is now available under the MEYLE no. 100 152 2001.
