Industry Organizations Offer Financial Relief to Japan

A number of industry organizations are offering donations and launching fundraising campaigns to assist recovery efforts following last week's devastating 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in northern Japan.

The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) is urging its 16,000 members to support the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami fund of the American Red Cross.

To jumpstart the campaign, the NADA Charitable Foundation has announced a $100,000 donation to the Red Cross’ special Japan fund. The Red Cross set up the fund to support disaster relief efforts in Japan.

Johnson Controls also is donating $1 million to the American Red Cross Japan fund to assist with disaster relief efforts. The company, which has roughly 2,000 employees in Japan, said it also will collect donations from its 142,000 employees worldwide to provide additional financial support.

The General Motors Foundation is giving an immediate $500,000 contribution to the American Red Cross relief fund to help earthquake-stricken Japan. This $500,000 donation comes in addition to the GM Foundation’s earlier contribution of $250,000 to the Red Cross as a supporting member of their Disaster Responder program. The automaker also has set up a web link that employees can access from their desktop work stations to contribute personally to the Red Cross disaster fund.

Bridgestone Americas said it will donate $250,000 to the Japanese Red Cross to assist with relief efforts. Previously, Bridgestone Corp. announced that it would donate some $3.5 million in cash, bicycles and clothing to aid victims of the disaster; Continental AG planned to donate 250,000 euros (about $348,000) in emergency aid; and Yokohama Rubber Co. said it would donate 50 million yen ($610,700) to assist with relief efforts.
