CAWA-Sponsored Battery Deposit Bill Signed Into Law In Arizona

HB 2132 eliminates the cap on the refundable deposit that a retailer is required to charge a consumer when purchasing a new lead acid battery.

CAWA - LogoCAWA has reported that Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has signed HB 2132 into law, which will go into effect 90 days after the legislature adjourns.

The bill, sponsored by CAWA, eliminates the cap on the refundable deposit that a retailer is required to charge a consumer when purchasing a new lead acid battery. The current $15 cap is replaced by allowing the market to establish the rate of the refundable deposit, thereby protecting retailers from the impacts of future increases in the manufacturer deposits on lead acid batteries.

In announcing the measure, CAWA called the new law a “great victory for CAWA and the auto care industry in financially protecting distributors and retailers in the commerce of batteries.”
