BorgWarner Produces One Million Variable Cam Timing Phasers In China

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – BorgWarner has produced 1 million variable cam timing (VCT) phasers at its manufacturing plant in Ningbo, China. The company supplies VCT phasers designed to improve fuel economy, emissions and performance for 1.2- and 1.5-liter engines produced by a major Chinese joint venture automaker. BorgWarner’s local engineering and manufacturing capabilities allow Chinese automakers to take advantage of VCT to meet escalating fuel economy standards.

“We work closely with our customers to provide VCT solutions that meet their specific needs. In this case, BorgWarner surpassed performance requirements, developing a compact, robust design with best-in-class standardization across multiple variants in the customer’s product line,” said Joe Fadool, president and general manager, BorgWarner Morse TEC. “Our reliable, quick-to-market engine timing systems and VCT technologies are expected to drive significant growth for BorgWarner in China.”

Controlling airflow into and out of an engine improves fuel economy, reduces emissions and increases power density. BorgWarner’s VCT phasers adjust camshaft phase relative to the engine crankshaft to optimize valve timing and engine breathing. Actuated by oil pressure, the phasers respond quickly to the demands of the driver and engine management system at higher speeds when oil supply pressure is abundant and at lower speeds through design optimization. The company says this cost-effective technology is suitable for a variety of engine types and can be custom-designed for a single engine or to support a family of engines with a modular design.
