CFS and APRA to Jointly Host Heavy-Duty Seminars at International Big R Show

The Council of Fleet Specialists (CFS) and the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA) have announced a joint educational effort that they say is a first in the heavy-duty parts business. The two associations have teamed up to present educational seminars for rebuilders of heavy-duty truck parts and equipment, for both on- and off- road vehicles. The seminars, followed by the largest display of rebuilding equipment, components, cores and supplies in the U.S., will take place during the “International BIG R Show” on Oct. 29 – Nov. 1 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Auto supplier Oxford Automotive Inc., beset by heavy debt, struggling North American plants and rising steel prices, is six months behind on reporting its finances to the SEC. The company plans to lay off nearly 200 people in Michigan and has been unsuccessfully shopping itself around for sale for several months, say automaker officials and supplier experts familiar with the company.

IBM Broadens Suite of RFID Services for Mid-Size Industrial Businesses

IBM announced this week an expansion of its services for companies seeking help with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. Over the past several months, IBM has developed RFID services for industrial companies, such as those in the automotive, aerospace and defense, manufacturing, chemicals and petroleum, forest and paper and electronics industries, and for mid-market companies, which IBM defines as those with less than 1,000 employees. The services, which are available now and officially unveiled Tuesday, include consulting, development of a business case, technical proof of concept, pilots for the client and trading partners and full system implementation.

New Extreme Commercial Truck Riding on Goodyear Tires

The new CXT (Commercial Extreme Truck) from International Truck and Engine Corp. – reportedly the world’s largest production pickup truck – comes equipped with commercial tires from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. The CXT stands nine feet tall, weighs seven tons and is more than 21 feet long, according to International Truck. The company will introduce the new truck this week at its plant in Garland, Texas.

Delphi Still on Track to Layoff 6,000

Delphi Corp. on Monday said it had completed the closing of its Flint West, Mich. operations, and that it remains on track to lay off as many as 6,000 workers. By the end of last week, the automotive components maker said the last 450 employees at the plant had either retired, transferred to other jobs in the company, or will be “flowed back” into other Delphi plants.

Venture Survival More at Risk

The protracted bankruptcy of auto supplier Venture Corp. continues, and the longer it drags on the less likely the plastics firm will survive, say automaker officials, supplier consultants and lawyers handling the case. Based in Fraser, Mich., Venture is one of the world’s largest auto-plastics suppliers and at its peak employed about 13,000 worldwide, including thousands in Michigan.
