New State Right to Repair Laws Introduced

While Right to Repair continues to be considered by the U.S. Congress, the bill has also been introduced in certain states this session.

Senate companions to Right to Repair bills that are under consideration in the New York Assembly (H.B. 5817) and the New Jersey Assembly (H.B. 803) were introduced last week. Similar to the federal legislation, the state bills would mandate that car companies share with independent repair shops the same service information, software and tools that they provide their new car dealer franchises. Failure of a vehicle manufacturer to ensure competition in the repair market could mean fines and/or provide the ability of a car owner or repair shop to take legal action.

In New Jersey, the bill (S.B. 1334) was introduced by State Senator Paul Sarlo (D). In New York, the Senate version of Right to Repair (S.B. 7001) was sponsored by Senators Carl Marcellino (R), John DeFrancisco (R), Michael Nozzolio (R), Caesar Trunzo (R) and Dale Volker (R).
