Auto Glass Safety Standard Updated

Revision focuses on calibration on ADAS-equipped vehicles.

The Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC) has announced that a major safety update to the Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standard (AGRSS Standard) has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

The changes are a result of several years of work by the AGRSS Standards Committee of the Auto Glass Safety Council, which represents a cross section of industry stakeholders and experts. The revised standard, officially designated as ANSI/AGSC/AGRSS 005-2022, is the fourth update to the AGRSS Standard since its adoption in 1999. Previous changes were made in 2002, 2015 and 2018. ANSI is the nationally recognized standards setting organization that oversees the process by which the AGRSS Standard was developed and is continuously maintained.

“Technology is moving forward with the ongoing advent of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in newer model vehicles. These changes to the definitive voluntary auto glass replacement industry safety standard will help ensure that calibrations are correctly and safely performed on ADAS equipped vehicles during the windshield replacement process,” said Mike Schenian, AGSC president.

“Our committee process, as required by ANSI, brought all the stakeholders to the table to come to a consensus on some of the most challenging technical issues. I am proud of the product as reflected in the revised standard and think it will hold up well until future technological changes require further revision,” said Bob Beranek, chair of the AGRSS Standards Committee.

The revised AGRSS Standard requires that those engaged in automotive glass replacement to use only equipment specifically designed and purposed for recalibration/calibration when recalibration/calibration of the ADAS is required by the vehicle manufacturer.

The revised standard also requires technicians preforming recalibration/calibration procedures to be qualified which includes the completion of a comprehensive training program with a final exam and ongoing education.
