To mark Motorsports Awareness Month, Athena Racing has begun to accept applications for its inaugural 2019-’20 team. Athena Racing provides STEM education on the race track proving the theories taught in science, technology, engineering and math classes. This unique program is going to give the 10 chosen team members an insider’s look into all of the STEM-related careers in the automotive industry.
“We are excited to be offering this opportunity to 10 young ladies,” said Executive Director, Loxley Browne. “The possibilities that will now be offered to them will open doors that were once closed. In these male-dominated careers, it is not easy to be the only woman in the room. We are working toward leveling the playing field and showing these young ladies that you can be a smart, beautiful woman who loves cars, racing, wrenching,”
This Olympian-like training program covers 10 education tracks: driving instruction, mechanics, safety, leadership, entrepreneurship, marketing, photography, public speaking, wellness and etiquette. Similar to Scouting’s Eagle Scout badge requirements; the 10 team members will master these tracks during their one-year of study. Experts from racing and business will teach the team providing insights and training in their specialty.
A unique extracurricular program, Athena Racing is the first all-female high school auto racing team. Athena’s goal is to create learning experiences and opportunities for young women that increase their confidence and inspire them to pursue their passion in a STEM-driven world. Based in San Marcos, California, the team will race in California, Arizona and Nevada. The full-ride scholarship, valued at $50,000, is provided to all 10 teammates and will cover all of their costs of training, racing and travel.
Applications are due by midnight on Aug. 31, 2019.Female, high school students can apply at https://athenaracing.org
