40 States Commit To Standard Tire Safety Info

The inclusion of standard tire-safety information in driver’s manuals comes from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators’ updated “Best Practices” for its members to include consistent language for proper tire pressure and tread depth.

From Tire Review

As part of Michelin North America’s award-winning Beyond the Driving Test program, the tiremaker and the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) have received commitments from 40 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., to include standard tire-safety information in driver’s manuals.

“Even seasoned drivers rarely think about the condition of their tires,” said Pete Selleck, chairman and president of Michelin North America. “This issue is compounded when the driver has little experience behind the wheel. That’s why Beyond the Driving Test has resonated so strongly across the country with teens, parents, educators and lawmakers.”

The inclusion of standard tire-safety information in driver’s manuals comes from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators’ (AAMVA) updated “Best Practices” for its members to include consistent language for proper tire pressure and tread depth.

AAMVA recommends monthly use of a reliable tire pressure gauge to check tire pressure while referring to the recommended pounds per square inch (psi) listed in the vehicle owner’s manual or on the driver’s-side doorjamb of the vehicle. In addition, AAMVA recommends the penny test to help drivers test for a safe tread depth of at least 2/32-inch.

Michelin launched the Beyond the Driving Test program with the FIA in 2014 to improve road safety in the U.S. Michelin has also created an accredited tire safety education module for driving instructors with the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (ADTSEA).
