Vehicle Battery Researchers, Manufacturers to Meet with EV/PHEV Companies in Shanghai

The SAE International 2010 Vehicle Battery Summit will focus on large-format lithium-ion battery technology for use in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.

WARRENDALE, Pa. — SAE International and Advanced Automotive Batteries have assembled speakers from across the world for a Vehicle Battery Summit in Shanghai, China, Sept. 1-3, to examine current and near-term battery technologies and their implications for electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV) market penetration. With generous new energy subsidies encouraging its growing middle class to purchase EVs and PHEVs, and a focused approach to battery research, development and manufacturing through its National 863 New Energy Vehicle policies, China is emerging as an ideal test bed for both new battery technologies as well as for market acceptance of electrified vehicles.

The SAE International 2010 Vehicle Battery Summit is being chaired by Dr. Menahem Anderman, president of Advanced Automotive Batteries USA, and will focus on large-format lithium-ion battery technology for use in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles and the energy storage designs that will guarantee reliability and safety while providing the best balance of cost and performance.

Summit content will cover battery technology advances occurring worldwide, including developments in Europe, North America and Asia, but in particular in China where all of the world’s major battery players have either established or maintain joint ventures and operations for research, design or manufacturing activities.

Establishing and harmonizing battery and related industry standards will be one of the key topics of discussion as the worldwide battery community attempts to determine the appropriate balance between standardization and innovation.

Car makers represented on the speaker list to-date include: Toyota, Ford, Chrysler, SAIC Motor and Tianjin Qingyuan Electric Vehicle. Battery manufacturers include A123 Systems, Johnson Controls – Saft Advanced Power Solutions, China BAK Battery, Lishen, Wanxiang, Shuzhou Phylion and Exponent. Tier one vehicle suppliers include:  Magna, Delphi, Ricardo and Celgard. In addition, the speaker list includes representatives of China’s government ministries for technology, utility researchers and representatives of major battery research institutes and universities in China and elsewhere.

The Summit is designed to provide accurate and balanced information that reflects both the emerging battery technologies and their likely impact on the rate at which electrified vehicles gain marketplace acceptance – providing executive level participants with critical insights to guide their strategic decision making.

Co-organizing the event, along with SAE and Advanced Automotive Batteries USA,  is the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC). The Society of Automotive Engineers of China (SAE-C) is a co-sponsor of the event, which is also supported by the Promotion Office of New Energy Automotive, Shanghai Municipal Government.
