UVeye, a developer of automated vehicle inspection systems, and Amazon are rolling out an AI-driven Automated Vehicle Inspection (AVI) system to streamline the daily inspection process of delivery vehicles. The system is designed to enhance fleet maintenance, minimize downtime for delivery service partners (DSPs) and elevate safety standards.
The AVI system, which rapidly scans vehicles as they pass through a tunnel equipped with cameras and sensors, will be implemented in Amazon delivery stations across the U.S., Canada, Germany and the U.K.
Initial trials at select U.S. Amazon delivery stations revealed the AVI’s capability to detect more defects in challenging areas, like vehicle undercarriages and tire treads (with tires accounting for 35% of all issues), compared to manual inspections. Leveraging computer vision and machine learning, the AVI system offers a faster, more systematic and unbiased inspection, Amazon said. Post-implementation data suggests that the technology led to a decrease in vehicle groundings thanks to enhanced maintenance.
Amazon operates over 100,000 branded delivery vehicles, transporting 20 million packages daily. The integration of the AVI system aims to expedite the delivery process while ensuring road safety.
