Toyo, CTNA Issue Recall Notices

Following Yokohama Tire Corp.’s recall of 69 medium truck radials produced by GTY Tire Co., a joint venture between Yokohama, Continental Tire North America (CTNA) and Toyo Tire USA Corp., both Toyo and CTNA have issued their own recall notices. All told, 142 tires are being recalled. Toyo is recalling 24 medium truck tires produced at the plant. CTNA issued a non-specific statement relating to the entire group of tires being recalled. However, the remaining 49 tires being sought are believed to be Continental and/or General brand medium truck tires.

From Tire Review Staff & Wire Reports

The tires are being recalled because of “a non-specified rubber compound in the shoulder area,” which could lift during “extended operation” and potentially cause a tread separation.

All three companies said that there have been no reports of problems with the affected tires, which were produced the week of Dec. 12-18 at the GTY Tire plant in Mt. Vernon, Ill.

Toyo is specifically recalling:

• Three Toyo M122 units in size 11R22.5 LR G carrying DOT number 3C3T1PE5004 and barcode ID numbers 4041610054, 4041610059 and 4041610060.

• Six M122 units in size 11R24.5 LR G carrying DOT number 3C4F1PE5004 and barcode numbers 4071571563, 4071571564, 4071571571, 4071571572, 4071571573 and 4071571584.

• 15 M127 tires in size 11R24.5 LR G with DOT number 3C4F1MD5004 and barcode numbers 4051603681, 4051603683, 4051603684, 4051603688, 4051603692, 4051603693, 4051603694, 4051603704, 4051603705, 4051605706, 4051603707, 4071571609, 407 1571610, 4071571615 and 4071571616.

All tires display a white barcode label on the tire’s lower sidewall near the tire bead with specific barcode identification numbers. Only tires with the specified barcode identification numbers (below) are affected by this recall, said Toyo.

Toyo said that any recalled tires should be removed from inventory or service and sent via freight collect to:

Toyo Tire (U.S.A.) Corporation
Western Regional Technical Center
3855 E. Jurupa Street
Ontario, California 91761

For tire pickup and shipment, contact Yellow Freight at 800-459-7834.

The recalled tires will be replaced free of charge if received by the tiremaker by Aug. 7. After that date, tires will be replaced on a pro-rated tread wear basis. Dealers with further questions can call Toyo at 800-442-8696.

CTNA had offered no specifics on any of its tires that are covered under this recall, other than to state that the affected tires carry DOT numbers ending in 5004. Dealers with questions regarding CTNA impacted tires can call the company at 800-847-3349.
