Repair information software and shop management software were two product categories in particular that saw a dramatic spike in 2009, in terms of purchase intention over the next year at the independent repair shop level. According to IMR President Bill Thompson, the slowdown in vehicle maintenance between 2008 and 2009 is reflected somewhat in the equipment purchase trends captured in the IMR study.
“What’s interesting, particularly for those in the tool/equipment segment, is that vehicle repair data and shop management software are two categories that have bubbled to the top in importance from 2008 to 2009 while other equipment has fallen in terms of purchase intentions,” said Thompson. “This is partially due to the decline in the number of vehicles serviced between 2008 and 2009. I expect the tools that have declined in purchase intention will begin to rise over the next year as miles driven and the aggregate number of vehicles serviced increases during 2010.”
