For this week’s “The Pulse” data feature, IMR Research provides a look at the trends for repairs at independent repair shops by vehicle age range. The data shows a variety of repair categories from routine maintenance (items such as oil changes and wiper blades) to steering and suspension and even collision repairs. As the chart reveals, routine maintenance remains fairly consistent whether the vehicle is five years old or 15. In addition, as IMR’s Bill Thompson points out, independent shops report an increase in certain categories of hard parts as vehicles get older.
“I simply thought this would be interesting to show people what independent repair shops see in terms of types of repairs as the vehicle ages,” said IMR President Bill Thompson. “There are certain categories of hard parts that the shops see more of as the vehicle ages.”
