Last week in "The Pulse," we looked at the number of young automotive technology students who fix their own or their friends’ and families’ cars. Today, we continue our investigation into the trends and preferences of the next generation of techs with a look at their part purchasing habits.
When it need of parts for a repair, the survey respondents said the following places are their first place to call or visit: retailers (like AutoZone) 42 percent; parts stores (like NAPA) 37 percent; the Internet 14 percent; new car dealers 3 percent and other 3 percent.
Nearly half (46 percent) of the student readers of Tomorrow’s Technician magazine who responded to the survey said they purchase parts online. Thirty-four percent also make tool purchases online. Seventy percent said they buy their own tools for the job.
Methodology:
The Tomorrow’s Technician Student Survey was sent to students with the May issue of Tomorrow’s Technician magazine. The questionnaire was included in the shipment of the magazine sent to 150 randomly chosen schools. Results of the survey are gleaned from responses from 230 students at approximately 34 schools.
Stay tuned for more insights into the trends and preferences of these future techs in upcoming editions of "The Pulse."
