In just a few short years, the automotive aftermarket has successfully raised awareness of the dangers of counterfeit automotive products, both on Capitol Hill and within the industry itself. Just last year, Congress passed the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property (PRO-IP) Act of 2008, which trade associations such as the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association worked to support though lobbying and educational efforts. However, with more attention being paid to the struggling automakers and suppliers in Detroit, has the focus for intellectual property rights waned on Capitol Hill?
We asked readers to give us their thoughts with last week’s poll. Below are the results.
Do you feel that the current legislative measures to protect intellectual property rights are having an impact?
No, it’s still not enough to protect us from aggressive counterfeiters.: 82.35%
Yes, we’ve moved the needle in the right direction.: 17.65%
THIS WEEK’S POLL
Last week, Deloitte LLP and The Manufacturing Institute announced the results of a new report that shows Americans view manufacturing as the most important industry for a strong national economy. At the same time, the report showed that while Americans view manufacturing as the most important industry for a strong national economy, they are not pursuing careers in manufacturing. Only 17 percent named manufacturing as among their top two industry choices to start a career, and only 30 percent of parents said they would encourage their children to pursue jobs in manufacturing.
Would you encourage your child to pursue a career in manufacturing?
