Auto Part Suppliers Study Jobs
Automotive jobs will continue to leave Michigan, but there are remedies, says a report on the future of manufacturing to be delivered today at the opening session of the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Cobo Center in Detroit. The U.S. is expected to see an 11 percent drop in its automotive production jobs by 2010, according to “The Odyssey of the Auto Industry” a study conducted by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants for the Original Equipment Suppliers Association.
PPG Announces Management Assignments
PPG Industries has announced two management assignments. Reg Norton, director of global manufacturing and supply chain for PPG’s automotive refinish business unit, has been appointed global director, environment, health and safety, effective April 1. He will replace David Cannon Jr., vice president, environment, health and safety, who is leaving the company on March 31. Lynne Schmidt, director of government affairs, will be promoted to vice president, government and community affairs, and executive director of the PPG Industries Foundation, effective July 1.
Bendix Brakes Expands Partnership with Pedregon Racing
Honeywell’s Bendix brakes has renewed its associate sponsorship with former Funny Car champion Cruz Pedregon for the 2004 NHRA POWERade drag racing series season. The brand has also expanded its involvement with the team by becoming an associate sponsor on 2003 Funny Car Champion Tony Pedregon’s Quaker State Funny Car.
Union Plant to Make More Assurance Tires
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. will expand production of its brand-new Assurance tire line at a union plant in Gadsden, Ala., ending a labor dispute that threatened to overshadow the product launch. The United Steelworkers of America accused Goodyear last month of violating a labor contract by building the new passenger tires at a nonunion plant in Lawton, Okla. New Video to Highlight Importance of Automotive Suppliers
MEMA and its market segment associations, in conjunction with Blue Sky Productions, are producing a special 5-minute video that highlights the importance of automotive suppliers – in terms of how they contribute to America’s manufacturing base and economy and how they fit into the entire automotive industry. John McElroy will narrate the video which will be shown at industry events, to legislators and regulators on Capitol Hill and on the MEMA Web site.
TI Automotive to Build New Plant in Mexico
TI Automotive, a supplier of fully integrated fluid storage and delivery systems, plans to build its seventh manufacturing plant in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. The new 60,000-square-foot facility will employ 400 people and will produce brake and fuel lines for automotive assembly plants in North America. The plant is expected to open this summer.

Dana Corp. Prepares for 100th Anniversary Celebrations
Dana Corp. will kick off its centennial-year celebrations at an automotive technology event in downtown Detroit, this while banners announcing the anniversary will begin peppering downtown Toledo. The Toledo firm, which turns 100 on April 1, will start its centennial celebration at the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress. Dana will return to the March 8 to 11 event at Cobo Center for the first time since 2001 after bowing out, along with other large suppliers, for business and financial reasons.
Tower Automotive Acquires Remaining Shares of Seojin Industrial Co.
Tower Automotive has acquired Seojin Industrial Co. Ltd., a supplier of components to the Korean automotive industry. Tower previously held a 66 percent equity interest in Seojin and acquired the remaining shares as part of a settlement of an outstanding note from the minority interest partner.
