Playing off the brand recognition the NASCAR name holds with its estimated 75 million fans, Exide Technologies has introduced a new NASCAR branded transportation battery program at Sam’s Club, a national members-only chain of retail warehouses. Bo Fisher to Succeed His Father as CEO and Chairman of Fisher Auto Parts

Following the death this week of his father Arthur Jay (Art) Fisher Jr., CEO of Fisher Auto Parts, Arthur Jay (Bo) Fisher III, has been unanimously elected to the position of CEO and chairman of the board. He has been president of Fisher Auto Parts since 1992 and owns a majority of the company.In addition, Gary Shifflett and Herb Godschalk have been promoted to become co-Presidents of Fisher Auto Parts.

Tenneco Automotive is promoting an expanded product guarantee program for 2004. Tenneco is now featuring limited lifetime warranties and a 90-day risk-free trial offer on premium Walker exhaust, Monroe shock and strut, DynoMax performance exhaust and Rancho off-road technologies. The new strategy will also enable aftermarket businesses to enhance bottom-line results while significantly increasing customer satisfaction and loyalty, according to Tenneco Automotive Vice President of Marketing Richard Alameddine.

More Aftermarket Eye Candy at This Year’s North American International Auto Show

Although there’s no shortage of muscle on the main floor at this year’s North American International Auto Show — the 850-horsepower Chrysler ME412 concept is only the beginning — there’s also a subterranean performance theme that’s been missing from previous shows. Once the take-it-or-leave-it realm of marginal players like Daewoo and stillborns like the revival Cunningham sports car, Cobo Center’s downstairs Michigan Hall exhibit area is studded this year with an intriguing array of production vehicles enhanced by aftermarket bolt-on goodies: designer wheels, low-profile tires, oversize brakes, high-performance shock absorbers and more.

Ex-Federal-Mogul Chairman Returns

Federal-Mogul Corp., an auto-parts maker operating under bankruptcy protection since October 2001, said Robert Miller has returned as chairman, replacing former CEO Frank Macher. Miller was Federal-Mogul CEO in September 2001 before he left to take the same position at Bethlehem Steel Corp., a company that’s also in bankruptcy protection. Miller’s appointment to chairman took effect Sunday, after Macher’s contract expired, the Southfield-based parts maker said in a statement.

Power Steering Flaw Prompts GM Recall

General Motors Corp. is recalling more than 800,000 cars because of a power steering defect that may have led to eight injuries. About 750,000 cars in the U.S. and about 55,000 in Canada — all made between Jan. 1, 1996, and Oct. 31, 1997, — are affected, GM said. The models are the 1996 Buick Regal, 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, 1997-98 Oldsmobile Cutlass, Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo, Malibu, and 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue cars. Also, some 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, and 1997-98 Buick Regal cars are being recalled. Eight reported nonfatal injuries may be related to the defect.

Cooperation Urged in Auto Costs Fight

As a former Ford Motor Co. executive, Kathleen Ligocki knows about the carmakers’ mission to slash supplier prices. But in order to survive long-term, automakers must work with suppliers to take out the waste, said Ligocki, now chief executive of Tower Automotive. Speaking on an Automotive News World Congress panel Monday in Dearborn, Mich., Ligocki, a former vice president for Ford customer services, called for a collaborative effort between suppliers and carmakers to improve both sides’ bottom lines.
