Obituary: Bill Laber, 66, Focused on Life’s Simple Pleasures

Today, I am reminded of how important it is to reach out to those you admire most, care about most, long for most, look up to most, trust most, respect most and enjoy most. Each of those feelings describes how I felt about Bill Laber. I was shocked to learn this morning that Bill passed away on Friday. I remain dazed, angry, confused, deeply saddened and remorseful that I hadn’t seen him in person in more than a year. We communicated often, almost every week if not more, but e-mail and phone calls are never enough.

Delphi Corp. disclosed more accounting errors Thursday and forced out two more executives, bringing to six the number of senior officials who have left the Troy-based automotive supplier because of financial irregularities. Delphi, already under investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for its accounting, said that from the time General Motors Corp. spun off the supplier in 1999 until the end of 2004 it failed to properly disclose the amount of accounts receivable, or money owed from other businesses for its services or merchandise, from its European operations.

Accounting Concerns Jolt GM’s Stock

General Motors Corp.’s stock skidded Wednesday after accounting experts cast doubt on how the automaker reported certain transactions with former subsidiary Delphi Corp., its largest supplier. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that several accounting experts it contacted had looked askance at the choices made. A GM spokeswoman insisted the accounting was appropriate and that the experts did not have complete knowledge of the transactions.
