Congressional Support For Right to Repair Act Reaches 102 Sponsors

Congressional support for the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act (H.R. 2048) has reached more than 100 sponsors, according to Kathleen Schmatz, president and CEO of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA). “This is a significant milestone in our efforts to obtain passage of right to repair legislation,’” said Schmatz.

Yesterday, Kathleen Schmatz, president and chief executive officer of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA), issued a letter to AAIA members to announce that the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act (H.R. 2048) is nearing a milestone 100 congressional co-sponsors. In the letter, Schmatz cites the association’s unrelenting pressure on Congress as the reason both the Right to Repair Act and the formalization of the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) continue to move forward.

TIA, AIA Push Hard for Right to Repair in Canada

Canada has taken up the Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair fight, and heavy lobbying by TIA and other groups may bring legislation through the Canadian Parliament soon. Paul Hyatt, TIA president-elect and owner of Superior Tire Corp. in Toronto, and the Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA) held a two-day lobby with MPs in Ottawa late last year to present the Be Car Care Aware Public Education campaign and to advocate the right of consumers to choose who repairs their car. Without legislation, Canadian consumers may be forced to take their vehicles to new-car dealerships even for emergency tire changes, Hyatt told the MPs.
