Oklahoma State Legislature Proposes State ‘Right to Repair’ Bill

Oklahoma’s House of Representatives has proposed its own version of the Right to Repair Act. House Bill 1584, known as the “Motor Vehicle Owners Right to Repair Act,” was introduced Jan. 3 by Rep. Lucky Lamons (D). Text of the bill states that the Legislature finds that limiting access to vehicle repair information limits consumer choice and thus limits competition. It also states that the “ability to diagnose, service and repair a motor vehicle in a timely, reliable and affordable manner is essential to the safety and well-being of consumers in this state.”

ASA Voices Opposition to New Jersey Right to Repair Act

The independent automotive aftermarket today scored a major victory in its battle for passage of the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act (H.R. 2048) when the Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee voted in favor of the legislation in an open mark-up session on Capitol Hill, according to the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA).

Last week, aftermarket representatives convened on Capital Hill to offer their testimonies in the most recent hearing regarding H.R. 2048, the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act. The hearing was held before the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection. Shortly after the hearing, the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA), widely known as the bill’s largest supporter, issued a press release with details of testimony from Aaron Lowe, AAIA’s vice president of government affairs. On the other side of the debate, the Automotive Service Association, which continues to encourage a non-legislative solution to the service information issue and opposes the bill, offered its own statements on the May 17 hearing.

AAIA Testifies Before Subcommittee Hearing on Right to Repair Act

The Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) today urged Congress “to wait no longer, but to move as soon as possible to enact the Motor Vehicle Owners Right to Repair Act of 2005 (HR 2048).” The statement is part of testimony given by AAIA’s vice president for government affairs gave at a hearing held on May 17th before the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection.

Right to Repair Hearing Slated for May 17

The Congressional Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection has scheduled a hearing on Wednesday, May 17 at the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing will focus on H.R. 2048, The Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act of 2005. Witnesses will be by invitation only. The Right to Repair Act, which was originally introduced by Reps. Joe Barton, (R-TX), Edolphus Towns, (D-NY) and Darrel Issa (R-CA), would require the car companies to make the same service information and tools capabilities available to independents service providers that they make available to their franchised dealer networks. So far, congressional support for the Right to Repair Act has reached more than 100 sponsors.
