The company was chosen for this grant due to its leadership in developing innovative, clean energy projects, specifically for the advanced technology R&D and commercialization efforts for lithium-ion hybrid vehicle batteries.
Chrysler Begins Production of New Hybrid Electric Vehicles
Chrysler’s new Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) began rolling off the assembly line this week at its Newark, Del., Assembly Plant. Chrysler is offering the two-mode hybrid powertrain on both vehicles built at the plant — the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen. Production of vehicles with the hybrid powertrain differs in several ways from production of those with conventional powertrains, according to the company. New processes were implemented to accommodate HEV production, including a unique powertrain assembly process and ergonomic-assist systems to aid in new functions, such as HEV battery installation.
Johnson Controls-Saft Awarded $8.2 Million Development Contract
The United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC), with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, has awarded Johnson Controls-Saft a contract valued at $8.2 million. The contract will focus on the development of lithium-ion battery systems for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and over the course of two years will seek to validate the commercial feasibility of lithium-ion technology for mass market PHEVs.

As increasing numbers of consumers look for fuel-efficient, low emission vehicle options, a test fleet of Ford Escape plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) is making its way on the road today. Powered by lithium-ion batteries from Johnson Controls-Saft, the demonstration fleet will examine the future of PHEVs as part of a complete vehicle, home and grid energy system. The fleet is the result of an ongoing collaboration among Ford, Johnson Controls-Saft, Southern California Edison (SCE) and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).
