MIDLAND, MI — Northwood University President Keith Pretty has announced three new appointments at the university.
Commenting on the new appointments, Pretty said, “During our continuing evaluation process of the university we have created this solid new team which we believe will lead us forward and continue to strengthen the current and future position of Northwood around the world.”
Dr. Timothy G. Nash has been named vice president of Graduate and Special Programs/Dean of the Richard DeVos Graduate School of Management. This is a newly created position. Dr. David Long, who has served as Chancellor and COO, will fill the role of provost and chief operating officer of the Michigan campus now vacated by Dr. Nash. Dr. William Busby will become dean emeritus and holder of the Major General William C. Lewis, Jr. Professor of Business Administration Endowed Chair.
The Major General William C. Lewis, Jr. Professor of Business Administration Endowed Chair was created by Senator Margaret Chase Smith of Maine who served in the U.S. House and Senate for 32 years and for whom the Margaret Chase Smith Library in Skowhegan, ME, is named. General Lewis was her longtime friend and associate who served as her aide when she was on the U.S. Armed Service Committee.
Dr. Nash joined Northwood in 1980 and received a bachelor of business administration in management from the university, a master of arts in economics from Central Michigan University, and his doctorate in curriculum and instruction and business administration from Wayne State University. He is undergraduate associate professor of economics and business and associate professor of economics and public policy at DeVos Graduate School of Management.
He is an adjunct scholar with the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Midland, MI, a former director of Economic Education for the Clergy for the state of Michigan and a three-time recipient of the Northwood University Sophomore Class Faculty Excellence Award.
Dr. Nash has co-authored three books and conducted research and consulting for Fortune 500 companies and the Motor Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA). He serves on the boards of the Midland Center for the Arts, Free Enterprise Institute (FEI) in Houston, TX, the Midland Academy for Advanced & Creative Studies, and Junior Achievement of Central Michigan, Inc. He and his wife, Pam, reside in Midland and are the parents of four children, Catherine, Elizabeth, Rita and Joseph.
Dr. Long has worked in higher education administration for more than 22 years, coming to Northwood University in 1992 to coordinate and lead the student recruitment efforts of the university. He has served as chancellor and COO for the past three years. In his duties as vice president of Operations and Enrollment Management he has been involved in oversight of operational, admissions, enrollment and retention functions. Prior to his career change in 1985 he was self-employed for 20 years in private practice in dentistry. His undergraduate work was done at Drake University and his doctoral degree of Dental Medicine (DMD) was accomplished at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
He has served as an officer or trustee for various professional societies, church boards, athletic leagues and fund-raising campaigns. He has held leadership positions in a city council, chamber of commerce, college trustees and school board presidency. Dr. Long received a doctor of laws, honoris causa from Northwood University during commencement in May 2007. He and his wife, Linda, reside in Midland.
Dr. Busby joined Northwood in 1992 as a chair in the Richard DeVos Graduate School of Management and later became Dean of the program. As Dean of the DeVos Graduate School, he was instrumental in establishing a leadership successor plan and maintaining growth of its faculty and programming. He also took the lead in establishing the first board of governors of DeVos as well as its advancement efforts.
He earned a doctor of business administration and a master of science in quantitative business analysis from the University of Southern California and a bachelor of business administration from the University of Wisconsin.
Dr. Busby has 14 years of managerial experience beginning with six years as an internal consultant and culminating with six years of general management responsibilities. He has served as vice president and general manager of American Can Company and as senior vice president of Lily-Tulip, Inc. He also possesses 10 years academic experience with an emphasis in strategy, primarily at New Mexico State University. Dr. Busby resides in Midland.
