Marelli announced plans to unveil its new “Lean” and “Advantage” platforms at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, set to take place in Las Vegas, from January 9-11. The reveal will occur in a private, invitation-only event.
The “Lean” platforms, designed by Marelli, aim to simplify both hardware and software designs. This approach leads to a reduction in the number of parts, weight and costs, while maintaining performance levels. Targeted at entry-level vehicles, these systems are mostly pre-developed, allowing automakers the flexibility to customize certain features. The initial offerings under this platform, LeanLight and LeanDisplay, will be featured in Marelli’s Design for Affordability showcase.
LeanLight, a new concept for headlamps and rear lamps, boasts up to 20% fewer components and a 20% reduction in weight, leading to a decrease of 6kg in CO2 emissions compared to traditional lamps, Marelli said. The LeanDisplay system offers enhanced local dimming capabilities at a lower cost. It also reduces weight by 40%, leading to energy savings and a reduction in CO2 emissions, according to Marelli.
Additionally, Marelli’s “Advantage” platform features a Digital Twin demonstrator, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This technology can replicate an entire vehicle cockpit in the cloud, facilitating faster design, testing, simulation and over-the-air feature deployment. This connected, virtualized cockpit is built on a containerized microservices architecture, allowing for independent feature upgrades without impacting existing functionalities. It represents Marelli’s move towards software-defined vehicles and hardware portable applications, the company said.
Marelli plans to expand its platform strategy, offering automotive manufacturers pre-developed solutions with customization options. The company is also developing additional connected systems and stand-alone software tools for designers on the “Advantage” platform.
