NASHVILLE, TN — Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire, LLC (BFNT) hosted two specialists from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) during a recent tour of the company’s truck tire plant in Warren County, Tenn. The event was part of Bridgestone Firestone’s partnership in the EPA SmartWay Transport program, a new long-term initiative to reduce emissions and increase trucking industry fuel efficiency.
Visiting the Warren plant were Anthony Erb, environmental scientist from the Office of Transportation & Air Quality and Cheryl Bynum, policy analyst from the Office of Transportation & Air Quality. Both work on EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership program. On the tour, the EPA officials learned first-hand about the engineering, innovation and complexity of the modern truck tire. The tour was led by Greer Tidwell, director, environmental management for BFNT, Guy Walenga, engineering manager, North American Commercial Products and Sean Fisher, senior environmental engineer for the Warren plant.
“The EPA is currently focusing on vehicle component performance as a way to improve air quality and fuel economy in transportation,” said Tidwell. “The agency is exploring the effect tire performance has on fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions in the trucking industry, and we are pleased to share our knowledge with the EPA in this important effort.”
