Eaton Wins Innovation Awards in China for TVS Supercharger and Hybrid Technology

Eaton's Twin Vortices Series (TVS) supercharger and hybrid electric power systems for buses have won the awards for Low-Carbon Auto Parts and Technological Innovation by Auto & Parts Magazine in China.

SHANGHAI, China — Eaton Corp. announced that its Twin Vortices Series (TVS) supercharger and hybrid electric power systems for buses have won the awards for Low-Carbon Auto Parts and Technological Innovation by Auto & Parts Magazine in China. An independent panel of judges recognized the two award-winning Eaton products for their outstanding contributions to new energy research and existing vehicle technology improvement.

"This is a great honor and reflection on Eaton’s dedicated efforts in relevant innovations," said Frank Wang, general manager — China for Eaton’s Vehicle Group. "We will continue to develop innovative products to increase performance while reducing emissions and fuel consumption. Eaton is committed to helping the sustainable development in the Chinese automotive industry."

The two Eaton products were selected in the "Energy Efficiency & Emission Reduction" category.

Eaton’s TVS supercharger design boosts power and low-end torque that drivers want while also providing vehicle manufacturers with the option of using a smaller, more efficient engine with no loss in performance or drivability. The TVS is a Roots-type positive displacement supercharger that features twin four-lobe rotors that are twisted 160-degrees. TVS technology is found on vehicles such as the 2009 Corvette ZR-1, Cadillac CTS-V, Audi S4, Jaguar XKR and Land Rover. Eaton expects that demand for the TVS Supercharger could increase as much as 80 percent over the next four years because of automakers’ demand to maintain high engine power while downsizing engines for improved fuel economy and lower emissions.

The Eaton hybrid electric power system is already in use in more than 1,000 buses globally The hybrid system includes start-stop technology that automatically switches off the diesel engine when the bus is stationary and turns it back on when power is needed. This system dramatically reduces emissions and noise, especially at bus stops.

Eaton offers the world’s most complete line-up of hybrid power systems for commercial vehicle applications. Eaton hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric and two hybrid hydraulic power systems are available or in development on truck models including DAF, Freightliner, Ford, International, Iveco, Kenworth, Mercedes-Benz and Peterbilt and on bus models from BCI, Foton, Heng Tong, JNP, King Long, Shen Long, Solaris, Yutong and Zhongtong. Eaton hybrid power systems have accumulated more than 50 million miles of road-tested service around the world and contributed to the saving of more than 1.5 million gallons of fuel and reducing more than 15,000 tons of harmful emissions.

Eaton’s Vehicle Group is a global technology leader in truck and automotive drivetrain and powertrain systems for performance, fuel economy and safety with products ranging from engine valves to hybrid drive systems. The group serves Automotive and Truck businesses with $2.7 billion sales in 2009, and is organized by global regions.
