Demo Addresses SVI As Solution To Vehicle Data Access

Auto Care Association, Michelin and Enterprise Holdings held a demonstration on Sept. 8 for the European Commission and other interested constituents around the world on the Secure Vehicle Interface.

The Auto Care Association, along with Michelin and Enterprise Holdings, produced a demonstration on Sept. 8 for the European Commission and other interested constituents around the world on the Secure Vehicle Interface (SVI). SVI is a standards-based technology that enables cyber secure access to in-vehicle data to trusted third parties. The European Commission is currently working towards delivering a legislative proposal on the critical topic of access to in-vehicle data, which will define the future of the mobility ecosystem in Europe and around the world.

Viewed globally by over 300 participants, the webinar included a live demonstration of the capabilities of SVI, examples of potential applications and new opportunities presented by the technology. The webinar further featured remarks by Joanna Szychowska, Head of Unit for Automotive and Mobility Industries at the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, who is leading the European Commission’s efforts in access to in-vehicle data. Additionally, experts were featured from leading mobility players who endorsed SVI as an optimal solution to enable innovation, competition and consumer protection.

“We were very pleased to be able to work with our partners at Michelin and Enterprise Holdings to produce this demonstration that illustrates how SVI can serve as a foundation for the development of solutions that ensure cyber secure direct access to the data needed by the auto care industry to provide repairs for late model vehicles,” said Bill Hanvey, president and CEO, Auto Care Association. “This access will be critical to future competitiveness of the vehicle repair industry.”

“We hope that the overwhelmingly positive reception in Europe for this solution will lay the groundwork for adoption in the U.S., where the Right to Repair battle and need to access to vehicle data ensues,” said Aaron Lowe, senior vice president, regulatory and government affairs, Auto Care Association. “SVI directly answers concerns across stakeholders regarding access and security, and creates a level playing field for all players.”
