OTTAWA — Canadian officials are considering following California’s lead in tightening vehicle emissions standards, the Detroit News reported Monday.
In September California’s Air Resources Board adopted the nation’s first regulations of automotive greenhouse gas emissions, requiring a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane, by the 2016 model year.
Ottawa’s interest stems from its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol that calls for a big cut in greenhouse gas emissions.
If Canada were to adopt California’s restrictions, or something close to them, on tailpipe emissions — and a bloc of northeastern states matched the effort as they have pledged to do — carmakers would be forced to build more fuel-efficient vehicles for more than a third of the North American market.
