American National Standards Institute to Host Free Conference on Transatlantic Partnerships

Open to all interested stakeholders, the conference will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As a special highlight of World Standards Week 2011, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will host a free U.S.-European open conference on transatlantic partnerships. Organized in conjunction with the European Standards Organizations (ESOs) – CEN, CENELEC and ETSI – the ANSI-ESO Conference will foster networking and an open dialogue on standards and compliance programs in such critical and emerging areas as e-mobility/electric vehicles, energy and security.

Open to all interested stakeholders, the conference will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C.

“From the boardrooms across America to the halls of Capitol Hill, leaders in the public and private sectors are sounding the call for increased opportunities for transatlantic cooperation to foster economic growth and innovation,” said ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia. “I encourage everyone to participate in this important interactive dialogue on key shared issues.”

E-Mobility/Electric Vehicles
The first session of the day will address e-mobility/electric vehicles as a priority area of focus from both the political and business perspectives. Moderated by Kathryn Hauser, U.S. executive director of the TransAtlantic Business Dialogue (TABD), the session will feature Michael Froman, deputy national security advisor and co-chair of the Transatlantic Economic Council, and Karel De Gucht, trade commissioner of the European Commission (by video), as well as expert speakers from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, leading automakers and standards developing organizations.

Energy
Moderated by Philip Piqueira of GE Energy, the second session will bring together industry and government leaders from the U.S. and EU to exchange insights on key areas in the energy sector, including smart grid, intelligent transport systems, energy management and eco-design.

Security
The third session will discuss the importance of U.S.-EU cooperation on standards for security, with particular focus on issues surrounding cargo and containers, aviation and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives (CBRNE) agents. This session will be led by Valley View Corporation’s Dan Bart, former co-chair of the ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel (HSSP), and will include speakers from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, among other security experts.

The conference is open to all interested stakeholders for free, including representatives of industry, government, standards developing organizations, conformity assessment bodies, the scientific and technical communities and other affected groups that underpin transatlantic trade.

The ANSI-ESO conference is being hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and is further supported by World Standards Week 2011 sponsors. Business attire is recommended.
